The guillotine, making the moment of passing away disappear through the invisibility of the falling blade, exacerbated some paradoxes related to the idea of a body as a sign of life, of interior animation: the absence of the instant of the blade is doubled by the search for signs of life and inertia in the body. Both G¨¦ricault and Villiers de l¡¯Isle Adam have recourse to what is at stake at the level of representation in this invisibility of the very instant of passing away and this body regarded as a producer of symptoms. Yet, traces, for them, are not definite signs, but the mark or indication of doubt, vagueness, and the condition of possibility of the work of art. %U http://trans.revues.org/456
