%X M¨¢s de 2 200 nuevos casos de c¨¢ncer de mama son diagnosticados anualmente en Cuba, y una d¨¦cada atr¨¢s me convert¨ª en uno de ellos. A finales del 2000 me somet¨ª a una cirug¨ªa de c¨¢ncer de mama en el Instituto Nacional de Oncolog¨ªa y Radiolog¨ªa en la capital cubana. Mi experiencia -con la enfermedad y como soci¨®loga en la Universidad de La Habana estudiando las relaciones de g¨¦nero- sirve de base para el siguiente ensayo. El art¨ªculo caracteriza a las mujeres cubanas de hoy, particularmente a aquellas que han tenido c¨¢ncer de mama o que est¨¢n propensas a tenerlo, y describe mi respuesta y las respuestas de otras para con nuestra enfermedad. Mi objetivo es aportar perspectivas e ideas que sirvan a los m¨¦dicos, enfermeras, ingenieros, f¨ªsicos, t¨¦cnicos y trabajadores de servicio y administrativos de los servicios de salud de Cuba que se relacionan con nosotras, para que tengan m¨¢s conciencia y nos hagan sentir m¨¢s profundamente comprendidas y respetadas. En este contexto, tambi¨¦n reflexiono sobre la representaci¨®n del c¨¢ncer en los medios de comunicaci¨®n cubanos, con recomendaciones para el desmantelamiento de los frecuentes prejuicios de fatalismo e incluso l¨¢stima. Over two thousand two hundred (2 200) new breast cancer cases are yearly diagnosed in Cuba, and I was one of them ten years ago. At the end of the year 2000, I was operated on from breast cancer at the National Institute of Oncology and Radiology of Havana. My personal experience with this disease together with my experience as psychologist, who study the gender relationships at the University of Havana, are the basis of this article. It characterized the Cuban women at present, particularly those who have suffered from breast cancer o are prone to have it, and described my own response and the responses of other women to face this disease. My objective is to offer perspectives and ideas that might help physicians, nurses, engineers, physicists, technicians and service and administrative workers in the health care system, so that they can relate to us, they can be more aware of our situation and can make us feel more deeply understood and respected. In this context, I also made reflections on how the Cuban mass media present cancer and made recommendations for eliminating the frequent prejudices of fatalism and even feeling pity for them.
