%X This paper attempts to present on an overview of the use of heat treatment as a technical method for knapping siliceous rocks. We have developed an experimental programme in order to document the signs typical of thermal alteration (i.e. color change or thermal gloss) and the moment when these signs appear in the heating process and also to know the technical advantages resulting from heat treatment. We experimented with 24 samples of dark nodular flint from Serra Llarga (Balaguer, Lleida) that has not shown the same reactions as other types of fl int. We have shown that surface roughness analysis is a new promising line of research for identifying thermal alteration in archaeological material. Finally, we should consider the heat treatment in a more broadly technical and economic context, and not just as a method in itself. Se pretende mostrar un panorama general del estado actual de las investigaciones sobre el tratamiento t¨¦rmico como procedimiento para la talla de rocas sil¨ªceas. Partiendo de varios autores, se ha desarrollado un programa experimental en el que se sintetizan los aspectos que se consideran m¨¢s relevantes: las ventajas que supone el tratamiento t¨¦rmico de la roca; los estigmas caracter¨ªsticos que produce sobre ella, principalmente el cambio de color y el lustre t¨¦rmico; y el momento de su aparici¨®n. Hemos experimentado con 24 muestras de un s¨ªlex nodular de color oscuro de Serra Llarga (Balaguer, Lleida) que no ha mostrado las mismas reacciones que otros tipos de s¨ªlex. Debemos destacar los resultados obtenidos en los pruebas de rugosidad de superficies, que han abierto una l¨ªnea de investigaci¨®n prometedora. Finalmente, apuntar la consideraci¨®n del tratamiento t¨¦rmico en un contexto t¨¦cnico y econ¨®mico m¨¢s amplio, y no como un fin en s¨ª mismo.
