%X This article argues that the underlying cause of harsh criticism toward the popular Turkish TV series Magnificent Century is the identity problem of the Turkish people. The series received a negative reaction from the nationalist-conservative circles because the of way the Ottomans are depicted in the series does not conform to the Ottoman imaginations of the nationalist-conservative circles
