The Turks who started to reign in Anatolia since the beginning of the eleventh century renamed many of the existing sites in accordance with the phonetic system of Turkish. The city of Nikomedia, after reigned by the Ottoman, was named as Iznikmid/Iznik¨¹mid and Izmid in 1327. The city was mostly registered as Iznikmid in the Ottoman historical texts and referred as so within the Ottoman bureaucracy between the 15th and 19th centuries. Towards the mid 19th century, Izmid was commonly used to call the city.. Hovewer, according to foreign literature of the 17th century and ¡°Seyahatname¡± (Book of Travels) by Evliya elebi, the city was called as Izmit by its people as the name ¡°Izmid¡± became widespread, it also caused some problems . When written in Ottoman Turkish characterized by Arabic letters the spelling of words Izmid and Izmir might look similar to each other if one didn t pay particular attention. This similarity of spelling sometimes caused trouble as offical and classified documents were sent to the wrong city. Therefore, the request for spelling of Izmid as Izmit, which was brought to the agenda of the Ottoman bureaucracy towards the end of the 19th century, was approved and came into effect in 1910. %K Toponomi %K Nikomedia %K znikmid %K zmid %K zmit. %U http://www.historystudies.net/Makaleler/1571951682_19-O%C4%9Fuz%20Polatel.pdf
