%X Relying on the Ottoman archival documents and state and education registers, this article examines women¡¯s education and the training of female teachers in the Ottoman westernization period (1839-1920). This study concludes that despite serious shortcomings of women¡¯s education and the training of female teachers, gradually female teachers filled up the majority of positions in the girls¡¯ teacher training schools. Furthermore, this article documents that a large number of foreign teachers were employed in these schools.
