%X Se realiz車 una serie cronol車gica que estudi車 5 096 pacientes fallecidos por c芍ncer para caracterizar la mortalidad por neoplasias malignas en la poblaci車n adulta de la provincia de Cienfuegos durante el decenio 1988-1997. Se analizaron las variables edad, sexo, lugar del fallecimiento y tipo de tumor; se calcularon los a os potenciales de vida perdidos y la tendencia lineal de las tasas de mortalidad (estandarizadas) mediante el m谷todo de los semipromedios. Se observ車 que la raz車n de mortalidad proporcional por c芍ncer se mantuvo alrededor del 20 % anualmente, mientras que el n迆mero de fallecidos y la tasa general de mortalidad por esa causa mostraron tendencias al incremento. Fallecieron en este per赤odo 1 166 pacientes por c芍ncer de pulm車n, tr芍quea y bronquios (22,8 % del total); se constat車 una franca tendencia al fallecimiento extrahospitalario y una discreta tendencia al aumento de los a os de vida potenciales perdidos por c芍ncer. A chronological series was made to study 5 096 patients that died from cancer in order to characterize mortality due to malignant neoplasias in the adult population of the province of Cienfuegos during 1988-1997. Variables such as age, sex, place of death and type of tumor were analyzed. The potential years of life lost and the lineal trend of the mortality rate (standardized) were calculated by the semiaverage method. It was observed that the ratio of proportional mortality from cancer was of at about 20 % annually, whereas the number of deaths and the general mortality rate due to that cause showed trends towards the increase. In that period, 1 166 patients died from lung, trachea and bronchus cancer (22.8 % of the total). A clear trend to extrahospital death and a discrete trend to the increase of the potential years of life lost because of cancer were observed.
