%X Las especies reactivas del ox赤geno est芍n implicadas en el da o celular. Sin embargo, en el organismo existe un sistema de protecci車n formado por compuestos y enzimas antioxidantes que participan en las transformaciones de dichas especies. La catalasa es una de las enzimas involucradas en la destrucci車n del per車xido de hidr車geno generado durante el metabolismo celular. Sus caracter赤sticas estructurales, as赤 como su papel en algunas situaciones fisiopatol車gicas se tratan en el presente art赤culo. Oxygen's reactive species are involved in cellular damage; however, in the organism there is a protection system composed of compounds and antioxidant enzymes that participate in the transformations of such species. The catalase is one of the enzymes involved in the destruction of hydrogen peroxide, generated during cellular metabolism. Its structural characteristics as well as its role in some physiopathologic situations are dealt with in the present article.
