%X Se hizo una revisi車n que expone los efectos m芍s relevantes que tienen los extractos obtenidos a partir de las hojas del Almendro de la India y demuestra que es una especie que se convierte en una fuente importante para el desarrollo de nuevas formulaciones naturales que contribuyan a la prevenci車n de enfermedades con elevada tasa de morbilidad y mortalidad en el pa赤s. El empleo de los fitof芍rmacos ha cobrado auge dentro del arsenal terap谷utico mundial, fundamentalmente porque sus efectos indeseables est芍n limitados, y adem芍s emplean tecnolog赤as de bajos niveles de inversi車n e insumos con la consiguiente disminuci車n de los costos. La Terminalia catappa L. (Almendro de la India) es una especie que abunda en Cuba y constituye un ejemplar de sumo valor porque sus hojas son ricas en compuestos conocidos como taninos hidrolizables, los cuales poseen efectos biol車gicos comprobados que resultan de inter谷s y se les atribuye una potente acci車n antioxidante. A review was made to show the most significant effects of the extracts obtained from the leaves of Terminalia catappa L. It was also proved that this species is an important source for the development of new natural formulations contributing to the prevention of diseases with a high morbidity and mortality rate in the country. The use of phytodrugs has increased within the world therapeutic arsenal, mainly because their adverse effects are limited and because they use technologies of low levels of investments and materials with the subsequent reduction of costs. Terminalia catappa L. abounds in Cuba and it is a very valuable specimen due to the fact that its leaves are rich in compounds known as hidrolyzable tannins, which have biological effects of interest. They are also attributed a potent antioxidant action.
