%X El s赤ndrome metab車lico es un conjunto de condiciones asociadas tales como dislipidemia, hipertensi車n arterial, intolerancia a la glucosa y obesidad. Al principio fue descrito en 1988, y en la actualidad se considera que se trata de una situaci車n de salud que promueve la aterosclerosis. Los sistemas de salud de los diversos pa赤ses han incrementando su inter谷s en el s赤ndrome metab車lico, hasta el punto de reconocerlo como un problema de salud p迆blica, no solo por su alta prevalencia, sino tambi谷n por su papel como factor de riesgo para las enfermedades cardiovasculares y la diabetes mellitus, que implican una gran morbimortalidad. Se han realizado m迆ltiples estudios para tratar de determinar su prevalencia en la poblaci車n. Se ponen en pr芍ctica programas regionales de prevenci車n de este s赤ndrome, con el objetivo de lograr una disminuci車n del impacto que el s赤ndrome metab車lico representa para los sistemas de salud. The metabolic syndrome (SM) is an assembly of associated conditions such as dislipidemia, arterial hypertension, intolerance to the glucose and obesity.
