%X El presente trabajo pretende interpretar los censos de poblaci車n aplicados en Chile durante el siglo XIX como eventos de car芍cter nacional que habr赤an contribuido al complejo proceso de construcci車n social de la naci車n. Para ello fija su atenci車n en la instituci車n que los organiza, el Estado, que se ve en la obligaci車n de aplicar mecanismos cooptativos y coactivos orientados a eliminar la resistencia de la poblaci車n ante este tipo de empadronamientos y de esta forma asegurar la correcta aplicaci車n de la encuesta. Asimismo, analiza que papel que tuvieron las autoridades locales en estos eventos, toda vez que la materializaci車n de la iniciativa depend赤a de la voluntad de aquellos actores influyentes en los espacios b芍sicos de organizaci車n social. Por otra parte, estudia la dimensi車n territorial que se desprende de la aplicaci車n del censo, como tambi谷n los intentos de la ciencia estad赤stica por homogeneizar una realidad social heterog谷nea. Por 迆ltimo, ofrece algunas v赤as interpretativas que demuestran la riqueza de esta fuente para comprender aspectos poco estudiados de nuestra historia nacional. The current paper attempts to interpret the censuses of the population carried out in Chile during the XIX century as events of a national character that would have contributed to the complex process of social construction of the nation. For doing that it focuses its attention on the institution that organizes them, the State, which is forced to apply cooperative and coactive mechanisms orientated to eliminate the population's resistance to this kind of registration and thus guaranteeing the correct application of the survey. Likewise, it analyses the role the local authorities played in these events, considering that the implementation of the initiative depended on the will of those influential actors in the basic spaces of the social organization. On the other hand, it studies the territorial dimension that one gathers from the application of the census, as well as the attempts of statistics as a science to homogenize a heterogeneous social reality. Lastly, it offers some interpretative approaches that show the wealth of this source to understand little researched aspects of our national history.
