%X El presente art¨ªculo se propone examinar el comportamiento de la ganader¨ªa y los empresarios ganaderos de la Araucan¨ªa durante los primeros sesenta a os del siglo XX. Consideramos que, a pesar de las condiciones favorables que existieron en la regi¨®n para su pleno desarrollo, la actividad se estanc¨® debido a numerosos factores, entre los cuales el rol del Estado y de los propios empresarios fue determinante. El primero no fue capaz de dise ar una pol¨ªtica clara que estimulara esta actividad y los segundos no se atrevieron a innovar, incorporar tecnolog¨ªa y modernizar sus actividades, proyect¨¢ndola a la industria de alimentos que el pa¨ªs requer¨ªa. Sin duda la competencia argentina, las epidemias que afectaron al ganado, la falta de forrajes y medios de transportes, los temores despertados por el bandolerismo, la situaci¨®n no resuelta de las tierras ind¨ªgenas arrebatadas despu¨¦s de la llegada del Estado a las comunidades mapuches y la crisis del 29 complicaron la situaci¨®n a¨²n m¨¢s; sin embargo, consideramos que como tel¨®n de fondo se observan en la regi¨®n las dificultes que enfrentaron las econom¨ªas agrarias en Am¨¦rica Latina durante el siglo XX, que mostraron debilidades en el proceso de maduraci¨®n del capitalismo. This Article examines ranching and the behavior of cattle businessmen in the Araucan¨ªa during the first sixty years of the twentieth century. The author considers that, despite the favorable conditions that existed in the region for its full development, activity was stalled due to many factors, among which the role of the State and entrepreneurs was decisive. The first was not able to design a clear policy to stimulate this activity and the latter didn't risk innovation, integration of technology and modernization of their activities, in order to develop a food industry that the country needed. Without a doubt, the Argentinean competition, epidemics affecting livestock, the lack of fodder and means of transport, fears awakened by banditry, the unresolved status of the indigenous lands seized after the arrival of the State to Mapuche territories and the crisis of 1929 complicated the situation further. As a backdrop however the author considers the difficulties faced by the agrarian economies in Latin America during the twentieth century, which have shown weaknesses in the maturation process of capitalism.
