Material y m¨¦todos: el modelo que se propone se estructura a partir de las relaciones anat¨®micas entre los componentes ¨®seos de la v¨ªa a¨¦rea y la ubicaci¨®n de la lengua, antes y durante la realizaci¨®n del procedimiento de laringoscopia directa en pacientes adultos. Se dise ¨® un modelo matem¨¢tico bidimensional de la v¨ªa a¨¦rea, y se estimaron las probabilidades de aplicaci¨®n cl¨ªnica. Con base en los postulados formulados en trabajos anteriores, se propone un m¨¦todo de estimaci¨®n del n¨²mero F que podr¨ªa determinar el valor cuantitativo del volumen de la lengua, de manera independiente de las dimensiones corporales del paciente. Resultados: se demostr¨® un comportamiento consistente del n¨²mero F derivado de mediciones cl¨ªnicas en individuos con v¨ªa a¨¦rea f¨¢cil. Conclusiones: el modelo matem¨¢tico registr¨® una concordancia aceptable, cuando se le compara con la evaluaci¨®n cl¨ªnica tradicional y demostr¨® ser confiable para confirmar el concepto de v¨ªa a¨¦rea dif¨ªcil, aunque pobre para descartarla. (Acta Med Colomb 2012; 37: 21-26) Objective: to propose a mathematical model of the airway, designed through validation and reliability analysis by clinical measurement in a sample of patients classifed as easy airway, for to standardize the method. Material and methods: the proposed model is structured from anatomic relationships between osseous components of the airway and tongue's location, before and during the direct laryngoscope procedure in adult patients. Based on previous information, we designed a two-dimensional math-ematical model of the airway and there were estimated probabilities of clinical use. Based on previous postulates, we proposed a method to estimate the F number. Results: we demonstrated a consistent behavior of the F statistic, derived from clinical measure-ments on individuals classifed as easy airway also were evaluated hypotheses about its possible application in hard intubation processes. Conclusions: mathematical model showed an acceptable concordance, when it was compared with the traditional clinical assessment and it demonstrated be reliable to confirm the concept of difficult airway, although poor to rule out it.
