%X The territorial adaptation of the Spanish dioceses to the civil provinces was regarded as a efficiency measure. This was due to the quick increase of the population from the XVIIIth c, the too vast territories of some bishoprics and the necessity of eliminating absurd enclaves from the past. Not only to avoid unnecessary administrative problems but also to achieve a far more efficient ecclesiastical concern on the part of the parishioners. Such an old territorial reorganization was included in the 7th article of the Concordat of Spain with the Vatican of march 16,1851. But the difficulties were so numerous that it took a century to be carried out. The present paper touches upon the case of the diocese of Carthagena, one of the most extensive of the country (Murcia, Albacete, Alicante and Almer赤a). Here the territorial reorganization did not end until 1957. La adaptaci車n territorial de las di車cesis espa olas a las provincias civiles era una necesidad en aras de una mayor operatividad y eficacia. Tanto por el r芍pido incremento de la poblaci車n desde el siglo XVIII como por el excesivo territorio de algunos obispados, la necesidad de eliminar absurdos enclaves heredados del pasado, y para evitar innecesarias complicaciones administrativas. Pero tambi谷n, y sobre todo, para lograr una m芍s eficaz atenci車n pastoral de los creyentes. Tal reajuste territorial ven赤a siendo planteado desde antiguo y por ello fue previsto en el art赤culo 7o del Concordato de Espa a con la Santa Sede de 16 de marzo de 1851. Pero las resistencias por causa de los intereses creados fueron tan tenaces, que su aplicaci車n, salvo excepciones, se dej車 esperar un siglo. El presente art赤culo analiza el caso de la di車cesis de Cartagena, una de las m芍s extensas del pa赤s por cubrir en todo o en parte cuatro provincias (Murcia, Albacete, Alicante y Almer赤a). Aqu赤 el reajuste territorial no concluir赤a hasta 1957.
