Pamplona %J HIb Revista de Historia Iberoamericana %D 2010 %I Universia %X With this article we propose to think about Nabuco`s trajectory with abolitionism, his first parliamentary action in the legislation of 1879, until the years following the creation of the BrazilianSociety Against Slavery (1880-1886). We will show how (during this period of growing radical abolitionism and intensification of the campaign in the streets) the exchange of correspondence increased between Nabuco, the British and the Americans acting in similar abolitionist societies within their respective countries. Its return to legislation at the beginning of 1885 occurred in an atmosphere of a growing gap already opened between abolitionists and supporters of slavery within society. Despite the solution he expected- immediate abolition without compensation for slave owners- had no support, Nabuco supported the gradual emancipation reforms proposedat the time by the liberal minister Dantas. The sudden fall of Dantas and his substitution by J.A. Saraiva as president of the council, meanwhile modified to worsen the character of the reforms previously suggested. The enactment of the Saraiva-Cotegipe law (1885), also known as the Law of the Sexagenarios tried less to protect the slaves and more the conservatives in congress and the liberal slave holders. ThatĄ¯s the reason why he had the partial support of many of them for its approval. For abolitionists like Nabuco, however, this represented a type of Pyrrhic victory- it served more to stop the accelerated rhythm of the transformations taking place and postponed for three years the end of slavery. %K Abolition %K Slavery %K Empire %K Brazil %K Politics %K Nabuco %K American Abolitionists %U http://revistahistoria.universia.cl/pdfs_revistas/articulo_114_1285888040786.pdf
