C¡¯est dans un nous ¨¤ la fois ¨¦nigmatique et ind¨¦termin¨¦ que se confondent le pass¨¦, le pr¨¦sent et le futur, la vie et la mort, la fiction et le r¨¦el, et la m¨¦moire comme h¨¦ritage rompu mais ¨¤ restaurer. Qu¡¯il s¡¯agisse d¡¯une m¨¨re et d¡¯une fille disparue, des ruines du pass¨¦ et du pr¨¦sent, ou du d¨¦sir d¡¯un Descartes agonissant de revoir sa fille d¨¦c¨¦d¨¦e, le roman ne cesse de souligner la continuit¨¦ du pass¨¦, du pr¨¦sent et de l¡¯avenir. Et au fond de tout, il y a, comme toujours chez Brossard, la centralit¨¦ de l¡¯¨¦criture et de la fiction comme premi¨¨re modalit¨¦ de la transmission des h¨¦ritages. L¡¯exp¨¦rimentation formelle, ici pr¨¦sente surtout dans la structure narrative du roman, est intimement li¨¦e ¨¤ cette volont¨¦ de transmission : loin de bafouer l¡¯h¨¦ritage du pass¨¦ philosophique, intellectuel et litt¨¦raire, l¡¯inscription de cet h¨¦ritage dans des formes nouvelles et souvent difficiles dans leur nouveaut¨¦ donne ¨¤ ce pass¨¦ une forme et un sens nouveaux.In this enigmatic novel, the characters are obsessed with a series of interrupted lines of filiation and heritage that they seek to restore: at first between generations, especially between mother and daughter, and then more globally those of humanity¡¯s past. Both personal and universal heritages are figured as rupture, loss and forgetting, fuelling the characters¡¯ obsessive need to re-establish means of transmitting the past. An enigmatic and indeterminate ¡°we¡± englobes the past, present and future, life and death, fiction and reality, and the memory of the past as an interrupted heritage which must be restored. Lost mothers and daughters, the ruins of the past and present and the death-bed desire of Descartes to be reunited with his dead daughter ¨C the novel continuously emphasizes the continuity of the past, the present and the future. Underpinning the novel, as always in Brossard¡¯s work, there is an insistence upon the function of writing and of fiction in the transmission of heritage. Formal experimentation, present here principally in the narrative structure of the novel, is intimately linked with the desire for transmission.
