%X La utilizaci車n inadecuada de los antimicrobianos ha tra赤do como consecuencia un incremento de la resistencia de los microorganismos y un aumento en los costos hospitalarios. Esta situaci車n provoca mala calidad en el servicio. Durante 2 a os se aplic車 una pol赤tica racional inducida a reducir el uso, o poner en reposo, a los antimicrobianos poco efectivos o inefectivos, en todo el servicio m谷dico del Hospital Clinicoquir迆rgico Docente "Joaqu赤n Albarr芍n", de Ciudad de La Habana, Cuba. Se aplicaron procederes y m谷todos creados por un equipo multidisciplinario. La forma de restricci車n del uso de antimicrobianos, a partir de un Grupo de Control, muestra alentadores resultados. En el trabajo se explican las funciones de este grupo. Se obtuvieron resultados concretos en la disminuci車n de la resistencia microbiana frente a los antimicrobianos m芍s utilizados. Son significativos los datos que muestran la reducci車n de costos y vol迆menes de antibi車ticos usados en relaci車n con el a o de referencia, per赤odo en el que a迆n no se practicaba la pol赤tica actual. La investigaci車n demostr車, que esta pol赤tica es aplicable en cualquier hospital, a bajo costo y con resultados a corto plazo The inadecuate use of antimicrobial drugs has hought about an increase of microorganisms resistance, a rise of hospital costs, and a poor quality service. A rational policy was applied at the medical service of the  Joaqu赤n Albarr芍n  Clinical and Surgical Teaching Hospital in Havana City, Cuba, in order to reduce the use ir not to use the little effective or ineffective antimicrobial drugs. Procedures and methods created by a multidisciplinary team were put into practice. The restriction established by a Control Group shows encouraging results. The functions of this group are also explained in this paper. Concrete effects were observed in the microbial resistance against the most used antimicrobial drugs. Significant data have been obtained in relation to the reduction of costs and of volumes of antibiotics used compared with the reference year when the present policy was not implemented. Research revealed that his policy may be applied to any hospital at a low cost and with short-term results
