%X Se estudi¨® la prevalencia de la fiebre reum¨¢tica en 1986 y 1996 entre los residentes habituales del municipio Pinar del R¨ªo con edades entre 5 y 14 a os. Se examinaron todos los sospechosos de la enfermedad en consulta especial creada a los efectos de la investigaci¨®n. Se aplicaron los criterios de Jones modificados para verificar el diagn¨®stico. Las tasas de prevalencia disminuyeron: en 1986 fue de 8,05 ¡Á 1 000 habitantes (5,78 para los portadores de fiebre reum¨¢tica inactiva y 2,37 para los que padec¨ªan de cardiopat¨ªa reum¨¢tica) y en 1996 fue de 1,99 ¡Á 1 000 habitantes (1,75 para la fiebre reum¨¢tica inactiva y 0,24 para la cardiopat¨ªa reum¨¢tica). La insuficiencia mitral fue la valvulopat¨ªa m¨¢s diagnosticada y hubo un decremento en las tasas de valvulopat¨ªas, lo que tambi¨¦n explica porqu¨¦ la magnitud de la enfermedad ha disminuido. The prevalence of rheumatic fever in 1986 and 1996 was studied among the habitual residents aged 5-14 from the municipality of Pinar del R¨ªo. All those suspected of the disease were examined in a special consultation created to this end. The modified Jones¡¯ criteria were applied to confirm the diagnosis. The rates of prevalence decreased from 8.05 x 1 000 inhabitants (5.78 for the carriers of inactive rheumatic fever and 2.37 for those suffering from rheumatic heart disease), in 1986, to 1.99 x 1 000 inhabitants (1.75 for inactive rheumatic fever and 0.24 for those with rheumatic heart disease), in 1996. Mitral failure was the most diagnosed valvulopathy. There was also a decrease in the rates of valvulopathies, which also explains why the magnitude of the disease has diminished.
