%X The article is centred on a discussion of teachers＊ identity perceptions based on a study carried out in Chile with a nationally representative survey of around 1990 primary and secondary teachers, and a set of interviews and focus groups with teachers.  Teacher identity is construed as having a personal element (teachers own definitionsof their role) and a social one (what society expects or definesas their role).  From this perspective, the article is centred on teachers reasons for entering the profession and for continuing within it, their degree of motivation and commitment to teaching, the perception they have of their self-efficac, how teacher education and experience have influencedtheir identity constructions, and finallythe tensions that are live between how teachers perceive their identity and the external social definitions about what is central to teaching and teacher identit. El art赤culo se centra en la discusi車n sobre identidad de los docentes sobre la base de un estudio realizado en Chile con una muestra representativa nacional de alrededor de 1990 docentes y un conjunto de entrevistas y grupos focales realizados con profesores de educaci車n b芍sica y media.  La identidad docente se entiende compuesta de una vertiente personal (las propias definicionesde los docentes) y una vertiente social (el encargo y la visi車n social de la docencia). Desde esta perspectiva el art赤culo se centra en las visiones que entregan los docentes sobre por qu谷 eligieron la docencia y siguen en ella, su grado de motivaci車n y compromiso con las tareas docentes, la percepci車n que tienen acerca de su eficacia,el rol de la formaci車n docente y la experiencia en su configraci車n identitaria, y finalmente,las tensiones vividas entre la identidad percibida y las definicionesexternas sociales sobre lo que se considera central en la tarea docente.
