%X La teor¨ªa de lo grotesco ha sido objeto de diversas interpretaciones a lo largo de la historia de las artes desde que dicha categor¨ªa est¨¦tica se constituy¨® como tal. Los estudios m¨¢s relevantes que se han llevado a cabo discrepan en el elemento clave que constituye la esencia de lo grotesco: el terror o el humor. Tomando como objeto de estudio el anime ¡ªun producto de la cultura popular globalizada¡ª, se analiza la utilizaci¨®n que de lo grotesco se hace en dicho formato art¨ªstico, y se llega a la conclusi¨®n de que en lo grotesco tienen cabida ambos componentes; es m¨¢s, ambos resultan imprescindibles.The theory of the grotesque has been analyzed from very different points of view since its appearance as an aesthetic category. Those perspectives differ from each other on the highlighting of the core constitutive element of the grotesque: either horror or humor. Taking anime ¡ªan artistic product of the nowadays global pop culture¡ª as the base of the research, this article concludes that both elements are not only present on most of the grotesque representations but also that they are key to the reception of such an affection, and that the given grotesque representation constitutes itself on a key element to explore and express the feelings of a western society.
