%X Partindo da conturbada rela  o de Monteiro Lobato com o grupo modernista, pretende-se discutir, tomando por base o livro de contos Urup那s, como o autor, no papel de criador e empreendedor cultural, captou um momento preciso e conflituoso do processo de moderniza  o do Brasil, flagrando, no interior, situa  es de decad那ncia e morte que indicariam antes um choque entre uma tradi  o agonizante e uma moderniza  o conservadora. Nesse sentido, a periodiza  o liter芍ria, ao colocar Lobato como pr谷-modernista, tenderia a desvalorizar sua obra face aos avan os vanguardistas dos modernistas, quando de fato Lobato nunca quis ser modernista, sem por isso deixar de ser moderno em sua vis o da realidade s車cio-econ mica e cultural do pa赤s, pois teria percebido um v芍cuo entre o decl赤nio da tradi  o e o que vislumbrava como modernidade. Nesse v芍cuo movimentam-se suas personagens decadentes e sem lugar no processo de moderniza  o do pa赤s.From the troubled relationship between Monteiro Lobato and the modernist group, we intend to discuss, based on the storybook Urup那s, how the author as a designer and cultural entrepreneur, captured a precise and contentious moment of the process of modernization in Brazil , having caught, from the inside, situations of decay and death that would indicate a clash between an agonizing tradition and a conservative modernization. In this sense, the literary periodization, when setting Lobato as pre-modernist, tends to depreciate his masterpiece against the advances of the modernists, when in fact Lobato never wanted to be modernist without thereby ceasing to be modern in his vision of the socio-economic and cultural reality of the country as he perceived a gap between the decline of tradition and what he envisioned as modernity. In this vacuum his decadent characters wander and with no place in the process of modernization of the country.
