%X The paper is divided into three interrelated parts. The first part introduces various stages of the science of teaching mathematics, covering all historical eras of the discipline from ancient times to the present. In addition to summarising a number of goals in teaching mathematics in primary and secondary schools, the concluding passages of the first part include an analysis of the relationship between mathematics didactics and other related sciences. The second part of the paper compares mathematics didactics and the theory of teaching mathematics since it is often claimed that these two terms are synonymous, which is not correct. Subsequently, the complexity of the didactic system is presented in the form of an elaborate scheme. The third part of the paper makes a methodological contribution to the issues under scrutiny, explaining the etymology of the word 'mathematics,' describing various eras and stages in its development, and clarifying the essence, development, and focus of mathematics as a science. By and large, the paper mainly aims to present theoretical starting points of the chosen issues, often providing juxtapositions of noteworthy claims by various personalities in the field. Vysvet uje p vod slova matematika, prin¨¢ a obdobia a etapy jej vyvoja, objas¨¾uje podstatu, vystavbu a obsah matematiky. Cie om pr¨ªspevku je pribl¨ª i  a spr¨ªstupni   itate ovi predov etkym teoretick¨¦ vychodisk¨¢ zvolenej problematiky. Za pozornos  stoja cit¨¢ty vyzna nych osobnost¨ª s hlbokymi my lienkami.
