The Gleason score is themethod most widely used and accepted histopathological to provide prognosticinformation for prostate cancer. Objective: To determine the association between the presence of prostateadenocarcinoma and the Gleason score with prostate volume, PSA level and PSA density(PSAD).Methodology: We reviewed the reports of studies of transrectal ultrasound of prostate,PSA and pathology reports of patients referred for consultation ultrasound for transrectalbiopsy of the prostate, for suspected adenocarcinoma, between august 2008 anddecember 2010, at a health services institution in the city of Cartagena. Colombia. Results: The presence of adenocarcinoma is associated with higher levels of PSA, aswell as with higher levels of DPSA. By contrast, isolated prostate volume did not showthis association. PSA levels between 4 and 10 ng/ml when the DPSA is less than 0.15ng/ml/cc, were associated with lower cancer risk. There was no correlation betweenthe level of PSA, prostate volume and PSAD with Gleason score of transrectal biopsies. Conclusion: The serum level of PSA is still useful in identifying aggressive prostatecancer, especially when you can exclude the elevation-related prostatic hyperplasiausing PSA density, and also that none of the pre-biopsy clinical trials analyzed had valueas predictor of tumor differentiation.RESUMEN:Introducci車n: el c芍ncer de pr車stata es el segundo c芍ncer en frecuencia en hombres anivel mundial, su incidencia ha aumentado por el uso de m谷todos de detecci車n precozcomo: las revisiones rutinarias, el Ant赤geno Prost芍tico Espec赤fico (PSA) y sus fracciones, como m谷todo de tamizaje y la accesibilidad y eficacia diagn車stica de la biopsia transrectal. %U http://www.revistacienciasbiomedicas.com/index.php/revciencbiomed/article/view/174/139
