%X The objective was to identify the scientific production about domestic violence by means of the descriptors ElderAbuse and Family and to classify the articles found in national and international journals according to the thematicfocus, the time, and the place of publication, research scenario, and description of the first author. Themethodological approach was a bibliographic review in the databases LILACS and MEDLINE for the period from1997 to 2009. In 2006, the biggest number of publications occurred, especially in Brazil and in the United States.The prevalence of choice among the researchers was the context of government and assistance agencies with apredominance of the qualitative approach. The object of the study followed the most varied themes: state ofmaltreatment and associated factors; understanding about the abuse, and perspectives of occurrence. It can beconcluded that this state of victimization is complex and represents a challenge both for the investigation and forthe policies regarding how to deal with family maltreatment in this population group.
