%X The double marginalization of Jos¨¦ de Acosta: religion and sovereignty in the Viceroyaltyof Peru (16th century) With this article we seek to reflect on the status conferred on the European extra alterityin the work of the Jesuit Jos¨¦ de Acosta. On the one hand, such an analysis can highlight some uses of religion as a tool for understanding the barbarian populations; onthe other hand, it is about showing the nexus between the evangelizing project and theinstitution of a form of Spanish sovereignty over the viceroyalty of Peru, in the secondhalf of the sixteenth century Con este art¨ªculo se busca reflexionar sobre el estatuto conferido a la alteridad extra europea en la obra del jesuita castellano Jos¨¦ de Acosta. Por un lado, tal an¨¢lisis permite destacar algunos usos de la religi¨®n como instrumento de comprensi¨®n de las poblaciones b¨¢rbaras; por otro lado, se trata de apuntar hacia el nexo existente entre el proyecto evangelizador y la instituci¨®n de una forma de soberan¨ªa castellana sobre el virreinato del Per¨², en la segunda mitad del siglo XVI.
