%X El uso del t¨¦rmino  accidente  est¨¢ muy extendido tanto en la lengua corriente como en el ¨¢mbito de la investigaci¨®n cient¨ªfica. Sin embargo, se han planteado serias objeciones a su uso. La connotaci¨®n de imprevisibilidad y aleatoriedad impl¨ªcita en el t¨¦rmino ha llevado a muchos profesionales de la salud p¨²blica a evitar su uso. Este trabajo pretende recoger el debate generado en el ¨¢mbito de la investigaci¨®n y de la literatura cient¨ªfica, as¨ª como presentar alternativas al uso de dicho vocablo. ------------------------------------------------- Should the term  accident  be used in scientific research? The term  accident  is widely used both in everyday language and in scientific research. However, there is no consensus on its use. Its connotations of chance and unpredictability have prompted many public health professionals to discourage use of the term. This paper outlines the ongoing debate in the field of scientific research and literature, and presents alternatives for the term  accident .
