%T QUE LES PERDONEN LA VIDA: AUTOBIOGRAF¨ªA Y MEMORIAS EN EL CAMPO LITERARIO CHILENO

%X Si bien en Chile existen textos de car¨¢cter autobiogr¨¢fico desde la ¨¦poca colonial, hasta muy entrado el siglo XX estos apenas ocupan un lugar en la conformaci¨®n del campo literario nacional, ya que son excluidos por cr¨ªticos e historiadores de sus ¡°panoramas¡± y catastros bibliogr¨¢ficos. Como en el resto de Hispanoam¨¦rica, descubrir estos relatos en su calidad de textos, esto es, m¨¢s all¨¢ de su funci¨®n documental, implica el reconocimiento de sus complejas estrategias discursivas y, en lo que respecta a su relaci¨®n con la tradici¨®n autobiogr¨¢fica europea, de sus frecuentes ¡°desv¨ªos de la letra¡±. Resulta particularmente de inter¨¦s observar la posici¨®n inc¨®moda de sus cultores, quienes deben justificar el empleo de la primera persona y la singularidad de su experiencia, en un medio en que prima la valoraci¨®n del pudor. Frente a este juicio adverso, desarrollan t¨¢cticas para conseguir el perd¨®n y benepl¨¢cito de sus lectores, en un campo literario en el que lentamente se va abriendo paso este tipo de producciones, de car¨¢cter moderno y subjetivo. Even though there are texts of an autobiographical nature in Chile that date from Colonial times, they are not considered part of the national literary field until well into the XX Century; quite the opposite, they are excluded from overviews and bibliographical registries by critics and historians. Like in the rest of Spanish America, discovering autobiographical accounts as texts in their own right (that is, beyond their documental function), implies the recognition of their complex discursive strategies and becoming aware of the ¡®deviation from the letter¡¯ these texts represent when it comes to their relationship with the European autobiographical tradition. It is interesting to note the awkward position of authors of this literary field, who must justify the use of the first person and the singularity of their experience in an environment which strongly values decency. In order to face this adverse judgment, authors develop tactics that grant them forgiveness and approval from their readers, while gradually giving way to modern, subjective productions.
