%X Cet article s¡¯appuie sur une dizaine de r¨¦cits de voyages, effectu¨¦s par des Fran aises dans les r¨¦gions arabo-musulmanes durant la seconde moiti¨¦ du XIXe si¨¨cle. Ils constituent un mat¨¦riau permettant d¡¯articuler ¨¦tude sur le genre et l¡¯imp¨¦rialisme. Le propos concerne particuli¨¨rement le r le des Occidentales dans la construction d¡¯un discours qui accompagne la colonisation et participe de la d¨¦finition des hi¨¦rarchies sociales et/ou raciales. L¡¯analyse comporte deux versants : le premier s¡¯int¨¦resse aux ¨¦l¨¦ments mobilis¨¦s dans la production d¡¯une repr¨¦sentation de la femme arabo-musulmane, figure de l¡¯assujettissement et contre-mod¨¨le de l¡¯Occidentale ; le second fait retour sur les locutrices elles-m¨ºmes et questionne l¡¯origine de leurs repr¨¦sentations. This article explores how gender and imperialism are articulated in the writings of a number of French women travelers to Eastern and Arab countries in the second half of the 19th century. It argues for the role of these Western women travelers in the construction of a discourse that accompanied the process of colonialism and contributed to the defining of social and/or racial hierarchies. The article begins with an examination of the rhetoric used to produce a representation of the oppressed Arab-Muslim woman, in opposition to that of the Western woman. It then examines the travel writers themselves in an effort to discern the origins of the representations they develop.
