%X L'article s'appuie sur un important corpus de t¨¦moignages laiss¨¦s par des femmes du premier XIXe si¨¨cle (1814-1861), Fran aises ou Britanniques, relatifs au voyage en Italie : un peu plus de 150 r¨¦f¨¦rences compos¨¦es de r¨¦cits de voyage publi¨¦s, de journaux de route, de journaux intimes, de fragments autobiographiques, ou encore de correspondances. Par opposition aux travaux bas¨¦s sur de petits ¨¦chantillons de voyageuses   repr¨¦sentatives   (quoique souvent c¨¦l¨¨bres ¨¤ un titre ou ¨¤ un autre), l'objectif est d'obtenir une vue g¨¦n¨¦rale, englobante, de l'approche f¨¦minine de l'Italie en tant que terre de loisir, de culture, et finalement ici plus pr¨¦cis¨¦ment d'Histoire. Il appara t que le discours f¨¦minin n'ob¨¦it pas aux st¨¦r¨¦otypes attendus et ne se concentre pas sur les m urs ou sur la sph¨¨re domestique. En explorant les routes, les villes et les monuments de la p¨¦riode des Restaurations et du Risorgimento, les voyageuses montrent (plus particuli¨¨rement les Britanniques), une propension non n¨¦gligeable ¨¤ s'occuper d'objets politiques et historiques : traces du pass¨¦ proche laiss¨¦es par les Fran ais, ¨¦l¨¦ments d'archa sme politique et social (poids des masses pauvres, caract¨¨re tyrannique ou arbitraire des pouvoirs), et facteurs de rel¨¨vement et de r¨¦g¨¦n¨¦ration, sp¨¦cialement ¨¤ partir des ¨¦v¨¦nements de 1848. Historical Traces and Historical Perceptions in French and British Women¡¯s Travel Writings on Preunified Italy (1814-1861).This article deals with women's travel writing about Italy in the first half of the nineteenth century (1814-1861), using an extensive definition of travel literature. The analysis draws on more than 150 references written and/or published by French and British women: travel books, travel diaries, extracts from autobiographies or memoirs, private letters.  Rather than limiting the study to a few ¡°representative¡± women, I describe a more general feminine view of Italy as a land of classical culture and of seductive leisure, but also as a foreign and dominated country whose destiny was affected by the accidents of History. Visiting post-Napoleonic Italy, French and especially British women did not limit their perceptions and feelings to the usual stereotypes about Italian ways of life and the domestic sphere. As they traveled, discovering the cities and the people, they also discuss in their writings matters connected with politics and history; for example, the legacy of the French occupation of Italy before 1814, or the signs of backwardness and the authoritarianism of political life in the Papal States and other principalities.
