%X This article is divided into two main parts: on the one hand, we will analyse the functions (as well as the public uses or the implementation of these functions) conferred upon Galician literary history. On the other, this study will explore the possibility that literary history can function as social history during periods of political repression. This last part of the study will focus on the analysis of several Galician literary histories published during Franco's dictatorship (1939-1975). The main aim of this article will be to show the variety of functions which specific social discourses, and in particular literary history, can asume in relation to the context in which they are produced and become operative.
