Many optimization algorithms such as genetic algorithm, ant colony optimization algorithm etc are used widely in various fields such as image processing, bioinformatics etc to solve problems with high complexity. Biogeography-based optimization (BBO) is an optimization technique introduced by Dan Simon in 2008. This technique is based on the theory of biogeography. This optimization algorithm works on the basis of two concepts-migration and mutation. With this article we provide a survey on the theoretical results on biogeography based optimization and its modified approaches. We also discuss about some key applications of BBO. %K Migration %K Mutation %K Immigration %K Emigration %K Evolutionary strategy %K Habitat %U http://www.ijecse.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Volume-2Number-1PP-154-160.pdf
