%X Les carri¨¨res des hauts fonctionnaires fran ais sont, plus que dans d¡¯autres pays, marqu¨¦es par l¡¯importance de la formation initiale et de certaines grandes ¨¦coles (¨¦cole nationale d¡¯administration, ¨¦cole polytechnique, etc.). Au minist¨¨re des affaires ¨¦trang¨¨res cohabitent des diplomates issus de l¡¯ENA avec d¡¯autres venus de formations plus sp¨¦cifiques. Bien que pouvant pr¨¦tendre aux m¨ºmes types de postes, l¡¯observation montre que leurs parcours ne seront pas tout ¨¤ fait identiques. L¡¯ensemble des postes et des affections possibles forme un espace social socialement hi¨¦rarchis¨¦ et enjeu de luttes internes. Dans cet espace social, la r¨¦putation acquise au sein de fili¨¨res de sp¨¦cialisation, les arbitrages personnels pour concilier vie professionnelle et vie priv¨¦e, l¡¯acc¨¨s aux emplois les plus prestigieux et valoris¨¦s sont imbriqu¨¦s de fa on circulaire. Au fur ¨¤ mesure de leur parcours, les diplomates d¨¦veloppent une identit¨¦ professionnelle sp¨¦cifique et construisent des arrangements familiaux capables de soutenir leur engagement au travail. Du fait de l¡¯alternance entre la France et l¡¯¨¦tranger et de l¡¯importance du travail de repr¨¦sentation, la carri¨¨re des diplomates est en effet particuli¨¨rement sensible aux contraintes de la vie priv¨¦e et des choix du conjoint. French diplomat¡¯s careers: between individual routes and collective structuringCareers of the French high-ranking civil-servants are, more than in other countries, marked by the importance of the initial training and by some high schools (National School of Administration, polytechnic, etc.). Inside the foreign office, diplomats stemming from the ENA(National Administration School) work with some coming from more specific trainings. Although they all can pretend to the same job, the observation shows that their routes will not be completely identical. All the jobs and the possible affections form a space socially structured on a hierarchical basis and stake in internal fights. In this social space, the reputation acquired within networks of specialization, the personal balance to reconcile professional life and private life, the access to the most prestigious and valued jobs are imbricate in a circular way. During their route, the diplomats develop a specific professional identity and build family arrangements capable of supporting their commitment at work. Because of the alternation between France and foreign countries and of importance of the representation¡¯s work, the career of the diplomats is indeed particularly sensitive to the constraints of the private life and the choices of the spo
