%X Since the application of realism as an unambiguous category in literary scholarship has been problematic for a long time, it is impossible to provide a comprehensive answer to the question whether a distinct return to 19th cen-tury realism can actually be observed in contemporary Russian literature. Nevertheless, a discreet poetic feature, historicity, which is traditionally part of any definition of realism and which is a characteristic poetic method of 19th century authors and works, is clearly discernible. This study exam-ines how historicity functions and what poetic source it can be connected to in L. Ulitskaya¡¯s works.
