Methods: Transverse study on a random sample of 237 people between 20 and 75 years old, reimbursed for at least one oral anti-diabetic or insulin by the Social security general funds. Data were collected during the examination of diabetic patients and by telephone from general practitioners. Results: The average age of the sample was 57.7 years old. Two-thirds were women. The diabetes had been present for 9.4 years and was treated with oral anti-diabetic agent monotherapy (31.6 %), double therapy (30.0 %), triple therapy (13.1 %) or insulin (21.5 %). Treatment was unknown or not being received on the day of the examination in 3.8 % of subjects. Measurements of HbA1c were available within the previous four months for 44.3 %. For follow up investigations performed within the previous year, 48.5 % were available for electrocardiograms, 49.8 % for ophthalmological examination, 58.2 % for examination of the feet, 74.3 % for serum creatinine and 69.2 % for measurement of total cholesterol. Three quarters of the subjects (n = 219) had an HbA1c over 7 %. Blood pressure was greater than 140/80 mmHg in 73.6 % (n = 228) and the glomerlular filtration rate was less than 60 ml/min in 24.4 % (n = 209). Conclusions: We found inadequate control of the disease and risk factors in the face of an explosion in the prevalence of diabetes as a result of the demographic and lifestyle in La Reunion. %K type 2 diabetes %K anti-diabetic treatment %K glycosylated haemoglobin %K prevalence %K Reunion %K risk factor. %U http://www.ameli.fr/fileadmin/user_upload/documents/Prise_en_charge_medicale_et_controle_du_diabete.pdf
