In traditional flood/drought monitoring, precipitation data used are usually from ground meteorological observation sites. Due to the heterogeneity of regional precipitation over space and time, quantity and spatial distributions of meteorological stations frequently limit the overall accuracy of the regional flood/drought analysis. As one major means of space-based observations, in recent years, satellite remote sensing has become an increasingly important technique for global precipitation change monitoring. In this paper, by using the monthly Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) 3B43 precipitation data from January 1999 to December 2008 and the Z-index method, through building regional integrated Z-index, the classification of monthly basin flood/drought grades and the calculation of precipitation variation coefficients, the characteristics of the recent 10-year flood/drought over the Dongting Lake basin are analyzed. Compared with the observations of precipitation from the meteorological stations in the Dongting Lake basin, it is indicated that the TRMM data show to be more effective and robust in monitoring flood/drought in a basin. Results show that: (1) because of an uneven spatial distribution of regional precipitation having been taken into account, compared with the commonly used area-average method, the results of regional integrated Z-index derived in this study are more consistent with reality; 2) grid points of TRMM data uniformly distributed within the basin can effectively describe the spatial distribution of precipitation falling in the basin. As such, the flood/drought monitoring results from TRMM data are considered more reliable than those from limited meteorological stations; 3) affected by a combined effect of the seasonal monsoon rainfall and complex local topographic features, flood/drought over the Dongting Lake basin happens more frequently, showing 2.8 and 2.4 months in an average of a year, respectively, in the form of basin-wide floods and droughts. In general, the frequency and grade of occurrence of basin-wide floods are higher than that of droughts; 4) long duration was found to be another characteristic of the flood/drought over the Dongting Lake basin. In the past 10 years, there often occurred sustaining floods or droughts lasting for 2-3 months, or even longer; and (5) the northwest, southwest and southeast parts of the Dongting Lake basin show a relatively high probability of occurrence of floods/droughts, whereas the probability is relatively low across the central and eastern portions, with showing the lowest over the northern part. %K TRMM %K Precipitation %K Regional integrated Z-index %K Droughts and floods %K Dongting Lake basin
