As the important natural component in cities and towns, the green space can not only purify air and reduce noises but also has beneficial water ecological functions. The water ecological function of the green space can be enhanced by reducing surface runoff and absorbing contaminants. Based on remote sensing interpretation, the main green space types were landscape green space and artificial pasture across the Taihu lake basin in 2008. The green space area was estimated to be approximately 55 686 hm2, accounting for 1.6 percent of the total Taihu lake basin. The landscape green space was the main part, amounting for 84.8% of the total green space. Within the study basin, the green space proportion of Shanghai was highest, taking up 40.54% of the total green space. The green space areas in a descending order were Shanghai, Shuzhou, Changzhou, Hangzhou, Jiaxing, Wuxi, Huzhou, and Zhenjiang. In terms of our fieldwork and the calibrated Soil Conservation Service (SCS) model, the reduced surface runoff amount can be calculated. Over, the green space intercepted 479×106 m3 surface runoff, accounting for 1.1 percent of the yearly precipitation in year 2008. The green space of Shanghai intercepted the highest surface runoff because of the largest green space area and a better vegetation composition. In terms of our study and other studies, water contaminants absorbed by the green space could be measured, suggesting COD 1916.2 t, TN 946.10 t, NH4-N 25.87 t, and TP 34.49 t across the Taihu lake basin in 2008. This further underscores the marked water ecological functions of the green space. The water ecological functions of the green space are influenced primarily by the vegetation composition. If the proportion of tree and shrub is high, the green space will have better water ecological functions because the crown of trees and shrub can intercept more precipitation and the soil and root can absorb more water and contaminants. Because of complex vegetation components, the landscape green space has higher water ecological functions than does the artificial pasture in the study basin. The green space of Shanghai shows better water ecological functions than other cities because of its largest green space area and better vegetation components. %K Taihu lake basin %K Green space %K Water ecological function
