%X Intensive land use has not only become one of the most important components in circular economy and development of society, but also been a key issue in national land resource management. Understanding the mechanism, process, and effects of land intensive use is helpful to optimize the spatial structure, improve the efficiency of land use, ease the pressure of development brought by resource and environmental constraints, and promote sustainable urban development. However, much attention has been paid to a variety of social and ecological problems, like numerous land and capital waste, accompanied with rapid urbanization with development zone and real estate crazes currently. Gansu is a province of an underdeveloped economy in China. In the context of accelerating rapid urbanization, growing requirements for building land, increasingly important grain safety issues, large population, and inadequate land and reserve resources of cultivated land, land intensive use and optimization distribution are not only directly related to reasonable land use, but also influence the development of economy and society. It is urgent to exploit its potential so as to achieve a higher efficiency of land use. Based on data of land use and economic statistics of 14 cities in Gansu Province during the period 1997-2006, the authors investigated land intensive use and local economic development. By constructing an evaluation system of urban land intensive use and economic development, and using the entropy-based multi-factors comprehensive evaluation, the level of land economic intensive use and economic development during the period 1997-2006 was evaluated. Meanwhile, the exploratory spatial data analysis method and gravity model approach were jointly used to analyze the spatial-temporal variation in land intensive use and economic development, and the coordination between them in Gansu Province. Results indicated that, as for temporal characteristic, the level of land intensive use and economic development was increasing; however, it varied with region. The gap between land intensive use and economic development was consistently increasing except for 1998. As for spatial characteristic, the level of developmental degree decreased from the north to the south, and from the west to the east of the province, whereas the level of land intensive use decreased from the centre to the external regions. The coordination level of intensive land use and economic development was generally low. The results from this study would offer a meaningful reference for investigating intensive land use and greatly benefit land utilization in Gansu Province.
