%X Since global warming is increasingly becoming significant, greenhouse gas reductions have been conducted. Changes in land use and its impacts on carbon sources and sinks are important factors affecting the carbon cycle process. It is the second reason for higher concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide while the fossil fuel burning ranks first. With the rapid development of industrialization, conventional farmland was reduced greatly on a large scale and converted to non-farm land. Then, the area of the carbon emissions was affected subsequently. The Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park founded in 1992 has changed Shanghai Hi-Tech industry distribution, and became an important foundation of Shanghai Hi-Tech industry economy development. Over the past 17 years, many great changes have taken place in the Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park and its surrounding areas, such as population growth, land utilization, transportation network, and industry forms. Using energy consumption data and land use of the Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park from 1989 to 2009, this study estimated carbon emissions due to energy consumption using a carbon emission model. The authors analyzed land use change and its distribution in the districts. In addition, the relationship between the change in land use and its effects on greenhouse gas emissions was investigated. Results show that: 1) in the entire period of study, change in land use/cover type and the transform between each land use/cover type in the study area were significant, with 89.3% of agricultural lands being reduced. The majority of them have been transformed into industrial land and commerce land, accounting for 27.98% and 19.01% of the changed land. 2) The emission of carbon dioxide increased significantly because of energy consumption. In 2009, the emission of carbon dioxide was 820,180 tons. Because of carbon sequestrations, for example, farmland areas decreasing continuously, the absorption of carbon dioxide in 2009 was only 5690 tons. The carbon dioxide absorbed was not enough to offset carbon footprints, which was 906 km2, equal to the area of 36.24 Parks in 2009. More detailed data concerning population, economy, and energy consumption since the park was established will be acquired to perform further research about the driving mechanism of land use change and the relationship between land use and carbon intensity.
