%X Development of te city and countryside is generally a process of urban land expansion accompanied by not only the cultivated land decreasing and its quality deteriorating but also the rural people transferring into the city.After reviewing the evolution history of urban and rural land use,the concerns of this paper are,first,devoted to explore the relationship between urbainzation,food yield and land use; and then,to discuss the urban and rural integration.Based upon the discussion,new idea of rational planning for urban and rural land use is proposed.It is argued that only by rational planning can the land use meet the needs not only for urban and rural development but also for the cultivated land protection.
