%X Tourist resources in Tibet are not only abundant, but also particular, which are beyond compare within the world. In this paper, current situation, advantages and position of tourism in Tibet are described, firstly; and then spatial structure, market structure and characteristics of tourism in Tibet are analyzed. It is argued that tourism is merely developed in the adjacent area of Lhasa and border area at present, though tourist is one of the most competitive industries within the whole Tibet. Besides, problems confronted with tourism development in Tibet, such as tourist resources have not been well developed and thus it far lags behind than other regions in China, are illustrated. Main factors restricting tourism development in Tibet are limited market, incomplete infrastructure, environmental disruption and social cultural conflict, etc. For an instance, tourism development has been associated with various forms of environmental degradation in Tibet, such as camp sites always have no waste-disposal facilities. Aimed at these problems, the author proposes that main concerns of local governments and institutions should be devoted to substitute traditional tourism products for ecological ones, meanwhile, to develop tourist types with high market competitiveness, such as mountain-climbing, trekking, researching or exploring tourism and other special types. Furthermore, more emphases must be rested upon how to combine tourism development with environment conservation, which is the crucial factor involving to sustainable development of tourism in Tibet.
