%X Shallow seas and tidelands resources are considerably rich over the Yellow River delta, which is continually growing with increasing river silt to deposit. Exploitation and utilization levels of intertidal zone resources are, however, quite low, with exhibiting large potential to improve. The current mode of the exploitation of intertidal zone resources falls short of a number of aspects, such as a relatively low efficiency, an uncoordinated relationship between exploitation and protection of these resources, a relatively fragile environment, and inadequate water supply. To that end, performing a reasonable evaluation of the suitability of the intertidal zone resources is of particular importance to appropriately make full use of and protect them as well. First, the authors investigated natural and economic conditions with regard to shallow seas and the tidelands environment of Dongying City in the Yellow River delta areas, Shandong Province. An artificial neural network was employed to evaluate the suitability of the intertidal zone resources, with the objective to achieve more efficient mode of resources utilization and sustainable development. A BP network for evaluating the development and utilization of the intertidal zone resources was constructed by accounting for a multitude of key factors which can characterize the comprehensive degree of suitability, involving topography type, soil salinity, soil type, soil texture, soil total nitrogen, soil available phosphorus, and soil available potassium. Results showed a wide range of degrees of suitability for exploitation in each subarea of Dongying City. Suggestions on reasonable planning, exploitation, and protection of the intertidal zone resources over the study area are given as follows: formulating reasonable planning for exploitation and reinforcing the management of enclosing tideland for cultivation, optimizing the industry structure and elevating productivity, as well as reasonable utilization of water resources and enhancing economic development. This study provides a basis for evaluation of the suitability of intertidal zone resources exploration, which would be useful for relevant studies in the future.
