%X The forest of Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis is an important pine forest type distributed in the south of China, but its long-term changes have not been systematically studied yet. In order to improve the management of forests, coordinate the relationship between protection and utilization, and to provide a basis for decision-making for sustainable development of resources, the quantity, quality, structure, and changes in dominant utilization direction of Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis were analyzed in the present work using long-term monitoring data from the national continuous forest inventory during the period 1987-2007. All changes were monitored every 5 years within the past 20 years. Results showed that in general, the Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis forest showed a decreasing trend from 1987 to 2007. For instance, the area decreased from 672, 000 hm2 to 590, 400 hm2, showing a mean annual decreasing rate of around 0.61%. The stock volume slightly increased, indicating slightly improved general quality of the forest. In the meantime, changes in the diameter structure revealed that the stock volume proportion of small and middle diameter groups tended to increase progressively, while that of the extra large diameter group decreased significantly. The individual timber volume of approach-mature, mature and over-mature forests decreased by 38.24%; meanwhile the individual standing volume also decreased greatly from 1987 to 2007. It was suggested that the available resource quality tended to decrease and the timber structure transferred from good quality to poor quality. The forest resources providing high-quality timber, especially extremely large-diameter timber, have not been received much attention during the past 20 years. Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis plantation greatly increased during the monitoring periods, but per unit area of the stock volume was found to be significantly lower than that of the average level of the same aged group. This reflected extensive plantation management and low productivity. Furthermore, the Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis forest was always managed in a timber-oriented way, resulting in heavy pressure on resource utilization during a long period. A large fluctuation of the proportion of commercial forests to non-commercial forests due to random readjustment seems to indicate an unbalanced relationship between reasonable utilization and protection. It was suggested that this kind of management strategy be detrimental to sustainable management of the Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis forest and thus need to be adjusted in future.
