%X According to estimations,population in Hong Kong was 6 307 900 at the end of 1995,an increase of 2 6% over the previous year Hong Kong has a small territory but a very big population It is one of the most densely populated places in the world with an average population density of 5 890 persons per square kilometre in 1995 Since the 1960s,Hong Kong's economy has kept up a steady increase and flourish,the success is mainly attributed to the great number of high quality labour resources Immigration from mainland China made a great contribution to Hong Kong's development The population engaging in tertiary industries increased repidly In 1995,this proportion of labour force reached 77% while that engaging in secondary industres dropped to 13 3% correspondingly Great attention has been paid in Hong Kong to the development of education and exploitation of intelligence so as to guarantee supply of high quality labour resource to meet demand of the region's social and economic development However,as education level of new immigrants is generally lower,the local government should throw in vast amount of resource of improve their quality and ensure long term development in Hong Kongati
