%X Traditional network architecture with pitfalls and deficiencies would be better not chosen to guide the evolution of current Internet to next generation network any more. It is urgent to research new generation network architecture that sufficing new requirements after well-estimating current state of the art in computer networks and reflecting the essence of network architecture. This paper analyzes the current status as well as the evolution and development trends of computer networks represented by Internet, and specifically it presents an in-depth anatomy of the essence of network architecture from multiple perspectives. In order to get complete recognition and understanding of the essence of network architecture, it demonstrates the necessity to synthetically consider the characteristics of network architecture such as generality, individuality, abstractiveness, and proceduralness from both systematic and evolutionary perspectives. Correspondingly, this paper suggests a rational Cognitive Framework for Network Architecture, and results in this research are provided as valuable reference and guidance for further research on new generation network architecture.
