%X The development of formal models of spatial relations is an important topic in spatial reasoning, geographic information system(GIS) and robot navigation, and has gained much attention from researchers during the recent years. Progress has been made in the models of directional relations between spatial objects. The primary research contents, methods and advancements of formal models for directional relations between spatial objects are introduced, and comparison among various existing models of directional relation is made at the same time. Existent problems and future research directions are also discussed.
