%X Dempster's rule(of combination) is the main facility of Dempster-Shafer's theory of evi-dence, but its validity is controversial all the time. This paper presents a strict derivation for Dempster's rule based on the compatibility view of belief functions. From that the validity and restric-tions of the rule are expounded, and the sources of the disputes over the rule are indicated.
