%X 30 samples of fresh basidiocarps of Armillaria mellea were collected from the Greater Xingan Mountains and the Changbai Mountains in China, from which 10 typical basidiocarps were selected for monospore isolation. Mating experiments indicated that all these 10 stocks had a heterothallic bifactorial mating system. Pairings between different mating types of those stocks revealed that there were at least 5 biological species of Armillaria in China. They were referred to biological species A, B, C, D and E respectively. Pairings of monosporous isolates from five European biological species and five Chinese biological species of Armillaria showed that Chinese biological species B was interfertile with European species A . gallica, and species E was partly interfertile with A. ostoyae. Therefore, Chinese biological species B and E are designated by the name of A . gallica and A . ostoyae respectively. All other pairings between species were intersterile.
