%X Twenty-one representative isolates of Alternaria belonging to three species were chosen for study from 211 isolates obtained from more than 200 fungal specimens on plant family Cruciferae. Among the 21 isolates, 10 were A. brassicae, 6 were A. brassicicola, 5 were A. tenuis. They were compared by using polyacry-lamide gel electrophoresis of isozyme analysis. The enzymes were esterase (E. C. 3. 1. 1. 1. EST), alkaline phosphatase (E. C. 3. 1. 3. 1. AKP), acid phosphatase (E. C. 3. 1. 3. 2. ACP), polyphenoloxidase (PPO), catalase (CAT), glutamate de-hydrogenase (E. C. 1. 4. 1. 3. GDH), mannitol dehydrogenase (E. C. 1. 1. 1. 67. MADH), alcohol dehydrogenase (E. C. 1. 1. 1. 1. ADH), xanthine dehydrogenase (E. C. 1. 2. 1. 37. XDH), superoxide dismutase (E. C. 1. 1. 5. 11. SOD). Fuzzy cluster of data from isozymes reasonably grouped the isolates into three groups. The grouping of isolates was completely consistent with the morphological taxonomy results, i.e. the isolates in one group standed for one species. The results indicated that banding patterns of isozymes were species-specific and were not related to hosts, substrates and geographical distributions. It revealed that the electrophoresis of isozyme analysis might be useful for distinguishing different species of Alternaria.
