%X The occurrence and distribution and the biological characteristics of mating types of Phytophthora infestans collected from tomato fields in China were first reported. The results showed that A1 was the main mating type in China, which covered 96.02% of the total isolates, and 8 isolates of A2 were detected in Guangxi, Yunnan, Hebei and Fujian among 201 isolates collected from 18 provinces in China. The growth of all isolates tested was inhibited on the plates of 10% V8 agar, but the growth rate and amount of sporangia produced showed significant variation on the plates of rye agar. Further research indicated the colony growth pattern was not related to the mating type of the isolates.
