%X A comparative morphological study of wheat karnal bunt, Tilletia indica, and its similar species was made by examining their teliospores under LM and SEM . Considerable variations in the range of teliospore size were observed between isolates of T. indica and between isolates of T. horrida, rice kernal smut. Among the similar species studied, T. indica was found to be the most similar to ryegrass smut, T. walkeri, but notably different from T. horrida, T. barclayana, T. setariae, T. opaca, T. sumatii and T. savilei. Practically, T. indica could be easily separated from T. horrida , T. barclayana, T. setariae, T. opaca, T. sumatii and T. savilei by its obviously larger teliospore size(the average teliospore size is >30mm for T. indica as against <30mm for the others). Under LM and SEM, T. indica and T. walkeri seem indistinguishable because of similarities of average spore size and exospore ornamentation, and the other distinguishing method seems needful.
